Wow...Queues all Over Abuja Banks As BVN Registration Expires Today

Chaotic situations were recorded in most banks’ premises in Abuja, Monday, as hundreds of customers besieged the banks in a bid to beat the deadline for the Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolment which expires today.

Also, customers that have more than one bank account were also seen with pieces of white papers where the banks where they had registered wrote their unique BVN numbers to take to other banks to key in.

The deadline expires Tuesday. In most banking halls including Zenith, UBA, Diamond GTB First Bank, Union Bank, Eco Bank in the Area 3, 7and 8, Garki, Wuse and Kubwa bank workers had difficulty in controlling the crowd created by the BVN enrolment, as most customers expressed fears that they might not be able to accessed their monies after the expiration.

Customers besiege banks as BVN registration deadlines expires
The BVN, a central bank initiative, which was launched in February 2014, is being supported by the bankers’ committee. It is aimed at protecting bank customers and further strengthening the Nigerian banking system. It was among other things, introduced to address safety of customers’ funds, avoid losses through compromise of personal identification numbers and other criminal activities in the industry.

The BVN is a unique number that enables one person to have a single identity in the banking system. It basically ensures that a customer’s identity is not stolen. A customer is only expected to register at one bank, irrespective of the number of accounts he has.

A customer by name Hamza Lawal who spoke to Vanguard on why he waited this long to register for BVN, he said, he was busy with his business and kept postponing it until he was told that the registration expires tomorrow.

“I was told that l will not only be able to access my account any long but also lose the money in the account.”

“If date is extended now, l am sure l will leave the registration for another day because even today is not convenient for me but l have no choice now”

An official of a bank in Area 3 told Vanguard that it is the usual practice of Nigerians to wait until the last minute.

She said throughout last week, only few people were walking in and out of the banks to register, adding that tomorrow (today) will be worse as more people will troop the banks.
