Fears, jubilation In NCC As Danbatta Orders Major Shake-Up

A major shake-up is currently ongoing at the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Vanguard investigation has revealed.

According to an insider source, the shake is coming going to cut across from the junior to senior staff of the Commission.

This is coming shortly after the new Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Professor Umaru Garba Danbatta, assumed office on Friday, 7 August, 2015.

As at the time of filing this report, it was not yet clear all that are going  to be affected by the shake-up.

When this reporter visited the Commission to confirm this development, most of the staff were found in exclamation and celebration mood, while others were still battling to come to terms with the news of the changes.

Some of them, who spoke in anonymity, said they were happy for the shake-up but expressed hope that the exercise would usher in a better regulatory regime in the telecom industry.

Meanwhile, the Head of Public Affairs at the Commission, Mr. Reuben Muoka, when contacted confirmed the development and promised to make the details of the changes public today (Monday).

The new EVC had on Friday during his first visit and handover ceremony held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, pledged to tackle headlong, the lingering challenge of poor quality of service and other industry issues affecting the industry growth.

The New EVC, who addressed a cross section of top management and staff of the Commission  promised to pay serious attention to  the lingering poor quality of service in the nation’s telecom sector and ensure affordability, accessibility and availability of service to all Nigerian consumers within the available resources.

Prof. Danbatta, who is a Prof. of electronic engineering with experience in the  telecom regulatory industry, where he ones served as Vice President of the NCC owned Digital Bridge Institute, DBI,  admitted that there are challenges in the telecom industry but said the challenges are not insurmountable with the application of the resources available to the Commission.

He said that the NCC under his management will maintain the edge which it has over other regulatory agencies in the African continent.

Prof. Danbatta was appointed on Wednesday 4 August, 2015  by President Mohammadu Buhari to take over from Dr. Eugene Juwah as the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, whose five year tenure ended on 29 July, 2015.

The President had on Tuesday last week  appointed Danbatta to resume as EVC of NCC in Acting capacity pending the confirmation by the Senate. (Vanguard)
