INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY: NGF Urged To Set Up NYEC

The Northern Governors Forum has been tasked on approving the Northern Youth Economic Council to ensure effective monitoring of young people in the region to facilitate proper mobilization of resources for sustainable development in the region.

Co-convener of a Youth Group, Northern Youth Business Roundtable, Lugard Okonbo at a briefing in Abuja to commemorate the 2015 International Youth Day said the call became imperative following the present socio-economic challenges being experienced in the North and the need to exploit the untapped natural resources in the region.

Lugard who is also Executive Director, Volunteers for Social & Economic Projects explained that the forum is aimed at supporting the change agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure maximum engagement of the country's teeming unemployed youths.

In his words "the aims of the NYBR-table includes to assist Northern governments bring international investors to develop natural resources in the region, promote peace, equity and even development of all sub-regions in northern Nigeria and ensure fast track networking and interface between high-net worth individuals and youths in Northern-Nigeria"

Co-convener of the Forum, Comrade Ahmed Suleiman disclosed that Nigeria can only be free from poverty with her residents co-existing peacefully when human and natural resources are fully harnessed in Sciences, Technology, Agriculture, Health and Education amongst other key sectors.

He who maintained that Nigerian youths remain the most resilient, innovative and hardworking in the world but however decried the difficult economic condition in the country which makes them less-productive.

"Nigerian Youths are very hardworking but most times loose focus in their individual gift due to fear. This happens due to the absence of a suitable environment for our self development under the prevailing harsh economic conditions which has created in us an evil menace, the monster often called 'the Nigerian Mentality', he said.

Comrade Suleiman who is also the National Co-ordinator B-YES said this mentality has deepened corruption in governance, resulted in deteriorating security and increased immorality in the country'

He however charged youths to take advantage of the forum to begin a business or expand their skills so as to make meaningful contributions to the society.
