NERC — Power Companies Brainstorm On Ways To Improve Performance

The Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Dr Sam Amadi has pointed out that part of the challenge besetting the power sector is really to do with project performance management.

Dr Amadi made the remark at the opening of a two day workshop initiated by the Commission with Industry Performance Management officers of Generation and Transmission Companies.

He said that the need to take the sector to an amiable height that could stand international reckoning makes it imperative to build a team of performance management officers, who would both monitor and report to the Commission particularly activities of generation and transmission companies. According to him, the current problem of the generated electricity predates privatisation.

‘’ We cannot wheel out adequate power today because there has not been project management which goes back to PHCN before privatisation’’.

To the performance officers he said, ‘’All of you have signed up to capacity improvement. We should all leave this place with a new understanding on how to deliver efficient capacity’’.

The NERC boss affirmed NERC’s continuous support with a pledge for extensive monitoring, geared towards achieving stable sector; taking into cognisance the need to make the grid strong enough to transport the power being generated.

The workshop is expected to provide a template for effective performance management for the industry.
