Nigerian Army Still On Focus To End Boko Haram Insurgency — Says Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai has urged troops of the Nigerian Army to seek better ways of ensuring that they are still on focus to ridding the country of the scourges of Boko Haram terrorism and insurgency by sacrificing their best to justify the confidence reposed in them by the Federal Government.

Buratai made the call in Maiduguri on Monday while addressing participants of the 2015 Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) Convention held at the Maimalari Cantonment Youth Centre, Maiduguri.

He said the RSMs occupy an important position in the drive towards repositioning the Nigerian Army as the most important link between officers and soldiers in discharging their responsibilities.

“It is pertinent to re-emphasize that my vision cannot be attained without a well-disciplined; knowledgeable and highly motivated crop of RSMs who are ready to willingly and effectively discharge their responsibilities at all times.

“It is in the light of this that the theme for this year’s convention has been selected as “Enhancing the Capacity of the RSMs to be Professionally Responsive in the Discharge of their Roles.”

He however noted that the topic to be presented during the three-day RSMs Convention, as well as the various group discussions have been carefully selected to address areas of need for effective performance of both officers and soldiers.

On the tasks and expectations from the convention, Buratai said: “As you deliberate on key issues bothering our Army today, I urge you to fashion out how better to perform your roles without losing sight of likely challenges of the future.”

He added that the task of maintaining discipline, trust and confidence in the Nigerian Army will continue to be challenged by the ever evolving constraints of asymmetric warfare coupled with the limitations on freedom of action.

The freedom of action, according to him, was however imposed by greater security and accountability, which was necessitated by ever increasing battle transparency and information technology.

He reiterated that the welfare of troops remains topmost priority,as they continue to fight Boko Haram insurgency in the North East.

“Every step is being taken to ensure that you get the best in terms of uniforms, boots, and equipment as well as medical care among other welfare.

I also wish to assure you of the Federal Government’s continuous support to the Nigerian Army in the discharge of its mission,” said Buratai, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari has also pledged his support to the Armed Forces in its current campaign to restore territorial integrity of the nation.

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state in his brief remarks also said that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Gen Buaratai has the “interest and commitment” in ending Boko Haram insurgency not only in the state, but

the entire North East sub-region of the country to restore peace among the various destroyed communities.

“I want to thank the Chief of Army Staff for the key interest and commitment he has exhibited in bringing this anarchy to an end. These

lunatics called Boko Haram has become a huge embarrassment not only to us in Borno; but the entire nation,” said Shettima.

He said with the emergence of the new Chief of Army Staff, and corps of competent officers and soldiers, this madness of Boko Haram, is gradually coming to an end.
