Search For Missing Medical Plane Conveying 7 Persons Off Senegal

An air and ocean quest was going on Sunday for a medical departure plane conveying 7 persons, including a French patient, which went down off the shore of Senegal.

The twin-engine aircraft flying from Burkina Faso to Dakar vanished from radars soon after 7 pm (1900 GMT) on Saturday over the Atlantic, 111 kilometers west of the Senegalese capital, Senegal's civil aviation authority Anacim said in a statement.

Senegal's air force was searching the range for wreckage of the plane that departed Burkina Faso's capital Ouagadougou at 4:35 pm (1635 GMT), according to airport sources in Burkina Faso.

Senegal's state press administration APS reported that inquiry operations led by two air force planes and a naval force boat had proceeded through Sunday evening.

The plane, which had been  expected to land in Dakar at 6:20 pm, fit in with the private Senegalair company, Anacim said.

No explanation behind why the plane appears to have overshot Dakar so far toward the west when it crash has hitherto.

Senegal's Futurs Medias news group reported that the airplane was associated with having come up short on fuel.

Aside from the patient, the plane was conveying two Senegalese medical attendants and a specialist and a Congolese man and two Algerian group members.

Reached by AFP, France's Foreign Affairs Ministry declined to uncover the identity of the French patient who was being airlifted, nor the explanation behind the person's presence in Ouagadougou.

Officials did say the French embassy in Dakar was in contact with the patient's relatives.
