Breast Cancer Walk Held: Campaigners Worried Over Myths

Breast cancer campaigners are worried about the high misconception and myth surrounding the disease among women.

President of Breast Care International, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai says despite sustained education on the disease the number of reported cases is still on the rise.

Thousands of women, school children took to the streets of Takoradi this morning to observe the breast cancer international walk.

Dr. Wiafe Addai says, the walk this year was focused on the youth because of new cases seen in women in their twenties.

"We have seen a lot of improvement. If about ten years ago no woman will come out and say she is a breast cancer survivor. If those days people were afraid to go to the hospital, these days we are having people who are coming early for us to preserve the breast for them.

"As for challenges, there are challenges in everything but that does not deter us. We are bent on doing what we are doing. We want to save our women. We want every woman to survive the disease," she said.

"In every 69 seconds a woman somewhere dies from breast cancer. We have it as a duty to educate our women to create awareness about the disease because Ghana is ranked tenth in breast cancer cases across the Africa.

"It depends on all of us to join forces in combating the disease," she added.

A breast cancer survivor is also urging all women to take interest in the examination of their breast regularly.
