Obiano Strives For Medical Excellence, Commissions Model Hospital In Ajalli (Photos)




The governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has demonstrated his commitment to turn the state into a centre for medical excellence in Nigeria with the commissioning of the newly transformed and fully equipped Orumba General Hospital in Ajalli.


The hospital project is one of the four model hospitals singled out by Rise Health Corporation USA for extensive modernization and upgrade in partnership with the government of Anambra State.

The other three selected hospitals are Rise Clinic Adazi-Enu, Rise Clinic Onitsha and Rise Clinic, Ossomala in Ogbaru, Local Government Area.

Commissioning the hospital, Governor Obiano restated that Health is an important enabler in his administration’s agenda and that he is committed to making the health sector in the state a reference point in Nigeria.

According to him, his administration’s approach to health is broken down into Infrastructure, comfort of patients, and Welfare of healthcare givers.

Governor Obiano recounted that prior to his assumption of office, the state’s School of Nursing was not accredited, but after robust efforts and fulfilling the requirements, it was accredited with the state now producing midwives and nurses.

He further added that under his watch and robust efforts, the first set of medical students from the state university who had stayed up to 10 years in the university owing to accreditation issues would bag their medical degrees this month.

He expressed the hope that that some of these new graduates would make up the manpower pool for the hospitals that are being modernised across the state.

He further disclosed that the newly re-engineered Orumba General Hospital has facilities to accommodate 100 persons at a time and assured that his administration in partnership with RISE clinic is also carrying out extensive renovation on General Hospital in Onitsha, Ekwulobia and Enugwu Ukwu while Open Heart Surgeries are now regularly carried out in Rise Clinic Adazi-Enu.

He expressed optimism that within the next 8 years, all the hospitals in the state would be remodelled for the delivery of efficient healthcare to Ndi Anambra.

Earlier in his address, the Managing Director of Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency (ANSIPPA), Chief Joe Billy Ekwunife had stated that as part of the state government’s commitment and responsibility to its people, it seeks through the partnership to establish Anambra state as a centre for medical excellence in Nigeria.

He posited that the project would initially focus on two areas which he listed to include the formation of a health alliance and the development of a state-wide emergency network and other emergency support services.

Chief Ekwunife highlighted the five areas of re-engineering to include facilities renovations and reconstruction, clinical and financial process improvements, training of workforce development, cost efficient sourcing of pharmaceuticals and cost efficient sourcing of medical equipment and supplies.

In her own remarks, the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Rise Clinic USA, Dr. Hia Tri explained that the project operates an Integrated Health Development Model, which guarantees that patients receive the right medical attention at the right price and in the right setting.

She applauded the Anambra State government for keying into the partnership in providing quality health care delivery in the state.

Also speaking, the Managing Director, Anambra Business Coalition, Dr. Emeka Okeke emphasized the need for the citizens to improve their medical awareness in order to benefit from the excellent facilities that the remodelled hospitals would bring to their doorsteps

Speaking in a similar vein, the state commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike praised the governor for his strong commitment in taking the health sector to glowing heights. Dr. Akabuike stated that through the governor’s commitment in the partnership, the project was completed in a record six months.

He said that the governor has done so much for the health sector in the state which include the setting up of the Anambra state Primary health care development agency which will take care of the primary health care centers in the state in a bid to address their basic needs. He urged the people to visit hospitals for check-ups and receive treatments.
