Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas, has urged restive youths in the Niger Delta to sheath their swords and embrace Dialogue means of pressing home their demands.

Vice Admiral Ibas was speaking at the flag-off of phase two of Operation Tsare Teku, the Nigerian Navy’s anti-piracy operations in the Niger Delta region.

He said that compared to the first quarter of 2016 which recorded 49 cases of piracy on Nigerian waterways, during the first phase of the operation between May and June, only seven attacks were attempted and all were foiled.

This necessitated the extension of the operation for another three months.

The Navy Chief stated that the exercise would now extend its operations to provide support for the Operation Delta Safe which has metamorphosed from Operation Pulo Shield, to cover the whole of the Niger Delta region and surrounding waters.

He then asked the various militant groups to explore democratic means to press home their demands rather than resorting to violence.

The Chief of Training and Operations, Rear Admiral Adeniyi Oshinowo, further highlighted the Navy’s achievements with the establishment of Operation Tsare Teku in April.

He said that the operation has not only helped in the reduction of piracy on Nigerian waterways, but has also led to better collaboration between the Navy and major players in the Nigerian maritime sector.
